Ways To Remember a Much Loved Pet
Anyone who has pets in their home will tell you how much they meant to them. Both Matthew and I had pets when we were younger and now we have two dogs and two cats in our home – I’ve said it before and I will say it again they are not just pets to us they are our family too.
We have had all four since they were pups and kittens. Marley is almost 5, Ziggy is 7 in a couple of months, Reggie turned 3 a couple of weeks ago and Pepper is our old girl at 12 years old.
Recently Pepper gave us a scare as she had a fit. She hasn’t had one since but and has suffered no lasting effects but we have noticed over the last few months that she has slowed down a lot and now spends most of her time sleeping. This has made us more aware that her time left with us is definitely limited.
I will be honest and say that I dread the day she is no longer with us as she is the best dog anyone could ever ask for. She has grown with my children, knows when I am upset or worried and has been my companion on many a night when Matthew has been away working – she loves nothing better than to lay on my feet when I’m watching TV.

I know we’re not alone with the love we have for our pets and all of us must say goodbye to them at one time or another – whether we are ready to or not and even if it breaks our heart. When I was younger and our family pets died other than them being buried in the garden and us making the area look pretty there wasn’t anything else available to remember them by. I am pleased to say that there are now many companies that offer their services to help pet owners remember their beloved pets. If you or someone you know has lost their beloved pet there are some very beautiful products available that will help comfort you or your child, these include:
A painting or an image
There are many talented artists who if given a photograph can replicate the image on to paper or canvas. One of my relatives had hid beloved dog tattooed on his arm after he passed away.
If you wanted an everlasting image of your beloved pet but on a budget, you could have them turned into a lovely Pet Illustration using vectorpets.com, their prices start from £8 so they are perfect if you are looking for a keepsake on a small budget.
A special keepsake
My friend’s daughter recently lost her pony to colic. She was bereft with guilt and wanted to find a keepsake for her daughter. She looked online and found a company that made resin beads with a strand of hair in them. All she had to do was send off some of the hair that they kept and within a few days her beads were sent to her.
Similarly, she had a framed collage made using some more of the pony’s hair tied in a bow tied with pink ribbon. The pony’s name was spelt using letter tiles. Although this type of item would only work for pets that have lots of hair it is still a very beautiful idea.
If your pet has been cremated there are many companies who will turn their ashes into precious stones for you – these can then be turned in to a piece of jewellery like a ring or a necklace. If jewellery isn’t your thing you could have their ashes made into a paperweight so not only will you be able to think of and see your beloved pet often in your home.
A flower
If you laid your friend to rest in your garden or even had them cremated but was planning to sprinkle their ashes in your garden you could buy a special plant. There are even some flowers that you can name yourself so that it gives your garden and memorial place a little bit more of a personal touch.
A star
If you have young children who don’t quite understand about losing a much-loved pet you could buy them a name a star kit. This would allow you to talk to your children about death and give them something to remember their pet by. You could even do it so that you look out every so often to spot their special star in the sky?
Have you recently lost a pet? Was there anything that you bought / received to remember them by?
