There comes a point in every parenting journey that your little ones begin to pester you about whether they can get a pet. Looking after an animal is a big commitment, but it’s a great opportunity to teach your little ones about the life cycle and encourage them to begin developing positive bonds with various species rather than fears that may appear if they were to avoid pets altogether. Deciding on which kind of pet your family would love the most can be so difficult, but this guide lays down the facts about several different animals to help you choose a new member of the family that both you and your children will love. Fish & Reptiles

Fish are probably one of the easiest animals to care for, and they are a great first pet for young children as it’s very difficult to look after them badly, just ensure that you provide them with a big enough tank and enough stimulation to keep them occupied throughout the day. Don’t forget to explain to your children that the fish cannot leave the water, as they cannot survive outside – apart from this, you’re good to go. Reptiles come in all shapes and sizes, but it’s best to rule out any that can do you or children harm, such as venomous snakes or snapping turtles. This does leave many species to choose from, like chameleons, bearded dragons, frogs, geckos and tortoises, all of which your little ones might otherwise not get a chance to see in their natural habitat. Do some research to understand their optimum environment before purchasing, as you may need a heated tank or lamp to keep them healthy. 

Cats & Dogs 

Cats and dogs are probably the most common family pets, as they have adapted and evolved over many centuries to live alongside humans as companion animals. This essentially means that they rely on us to provide them with care and food, and in return show love and protection. Cats are very simple to look after and often make strong bonds with humans, especially if you acquire them in the first few weeks of life as a kitten. Dogs are regarded in many cultures as man’s best friend, as they show so much affection and loyalty towards their owners and often become a genuine member of the family. The only issue that comes with having a dog of your own is the need to take them on several daily walks to keep active, and you have to train them well to ensure they do not bark excessively or bite any guests. 

Farmyard Animals

If you have the luxury of owning land, it’s a great idea to get some farmyard animals. It takes more time to care for such species and you may have to commit a fair amount of time to do so, but it’s such a rewarding experience and a really great learning opportunity. Build some stables and choose between horses, sheep, goats and chicken to create your own mini family farm!
