The next best thing – pergolas with retractable roofs
Over the summer I’ve heard lots about pergolas, their advantages, and disadvantages and how they could be improved. Pergolas have long been a popular trend for outdoor shading, adding an architectural element to your garden. They are commonly formed of four large wooden beams and a lattice-style roof for shade and comfort. The Spruce identified how “pergolas provide shade, but the location you set it up may require you to purchase some type of cover for the top of the structure.”
This got me thinking, surely the point of installing a pergola is to offer protection from the elements. I don’t want to continuously be adding extras to my pergola until it finally does what it’s meant to! That’s where the lightbulb went off and I found the next best thing… retractable roofs Ireland by Designer Shade Solutions.
What is a retractable roof?
Well, after speaking with Designer Shade Solutions Ireland, I discovered that retractable roof pergolas are the next step up from traditional pergola structures. The roof retracts to offer shade when needed, opens for sunlight, or closes to protect from strong winds and rain (so there really is no excuse to not be outside).
You Have to Laugh noted in a recent blog post that “we don’t just want something that looks pretty in our gardens, we want something practical that will actually allow us to enjoy our gardens” and it’s true! Why invest in a structure that can only be used throughout certain times of the year? I love my garden and the idea of enjoying it all year round sounds like the perfect solution to me. So, if a retractable awning or retractable pergola allows for this, then I’m here for it!

Mummy Vs Work informed me that these retractable roofs, also known as roof louvres, “can be customised with side glass screens, heating and lighting to create the ultimate indoor/outdoor room.” Is there anything they can’t do?

So, what do you think? Are you in need of a pergola with a retractable roof in Ireland? I’m thinking I might install one of these structures at the bottom of my garden, as I know this summer heatwave isn’t going to last much longer and I’m not quite ready to let go yet! I think its settled pergolas with retractable roofs are clearly the next best thing.
