How to Be Less Wasteful at Work
Nowadays, there is a much stronger focus on environmental issues than there ever was in the past. We have become more conscious of how wasteful behaviour is not only bad for the world around us, but it is also quite costly. With that in mind, people are trying to recycle their waste where possible, while also cutting down on energy use.
Although being mindful of the way we treat the environment within our homes is a fantastic place to start, it’s also worth paying more attention to the same sort of behaviour in the workplace. Many of us are guilty of being even more wasteful at work, because we don’t think we have to pay the price financially. This is actually a misconception, as the more money our employers have to spend on wasted energy and office supplies, the less they can spend on our salaries, training and other benefits.
Of course, recycling is a great place to start but there are other things you can do to be less wasteful at work. If you drink tea and coffee from a machine, it might be worth bringing in a reusable mug. The same rule applies to water, as there is no need to repeatedly use plastic cups when you could bring in a bottle.
At the end of each day, you need to remember to turn shut down your desktop rather than simply turning off the monitor. While this might add 5 minutes to your morning routine, it will save energy and the utility bills will decrease. Another thing to think about is your use of the printer. Do you actually need to print out documents or can they be sent via email to other members of staff? You could even suggest to your employer that the company invest in a managed print company to assess print habits across the different departments.
Speak to your employer and let them know that you are seeking ways to be less wasteful at work. It is likely that they will support you and inform the rest of the company to do the same so that you can work as a team to be kinder to the environment and save money for the business.
