What To Consider When Planning a Wedding In Corsica

Corsica is a beautiful French Island that has lots to offer its visitors. From its beautiful beaches to its historic towns there’s something for everyone. It is a popular holiday destination and it is also a popular place for people to get married.

How easy is it to get married in Corsica

If you’re from the UK and looking to get married in Corsica it’s not as straightforward as other places abroad. There are two ways in which you can get married in Corsica – both are a little time consuming and complicated so unless your heart is 100% set on Corsica being your wedding destination you may change your mind.

One way is to get married in the UK before travelling to Corsica then have a religious or humanist ceremony once you’ve arrived. The second is to have a civil ceremony in Corsica and then have your religious ceremony or humanist ceremony with a celebrant afterwards. If you choose this option you need to have lived in the town where you plan to wed for 40 days with your partner prior to your wedding.

Are there any legal requirements

If you are getting married in the UK before you travel to Corsica there are very few legal requirements. If you are taking a big party with you, you may even choose not to tell them that you’ve already “walked down the aisle” in the UK. You have to follow all the legal requirements here in the UK before you get married though and make sure you take your wedding certificate with you as your celebrant will need to see this.

If you are planning to have your civil service in Corsica too then it is somewhat more complicated. As already mentioned you need to live in the town beforehand for at least 40 days. You will then need to fill out some paperwork. This is where you might decide to use a wedding planner who can do all this for you. If you want to do it yourself you need to contact the town hall (Mairie) and the British consulate as there are a number of forms to fill in and there is also a lot of proof needed too including your passport, bills proving your French address, birth certificates to name but a few. Once you have had your civil service at the Mairie you can then have your religious or humanist ceremony.

When is the best time to get married

Just like the UK Corsica has cold and wet weather too. The best time to visit is between May and September as this is when the weather is at its best. If you are planning an outdoor ceremony I would advise you plan this for the warmer months.

Where will you stay

Depending on how long you are planning to stay in Corsica you may decide to stay in a luxurious hotel or perhaps one of the many beautiful Corsica villas that are available to rent. Having a villa would give you more privacy and a place to relax before and after your big day. if you’re only having a small intimate wedding all your guests could say in the same place with you too.
