The Pros and Cons of Parquet Flooring
Parquet flooring has been around a long time. In fact, it can be dated back to 16th century France when it was used to floor palaces and chateaus alike. Due to its hardwearing nature, it has been used in hospitals, libraries and factories for many years. It is also a very popular choice of flooring in homes too and it is easy to see why.
So what exactly is parquet flooring? In its simplest form, it is a floor covering made up of wooden pieces that are arranged in a mosaic-like pattern. If you are looking to use parquet flooring you might be interested to read about some of its main pros and cons. These are listed below.
The pros of parquet flooring
- It looks great – There’s no denying that this type of flooring looks lovely once it is laid. The great thing about it is that you can choose the pattern and have it made up of different length pieces of wood if you wish.
- It is low maintenance – A quick sweep and vacuum will keep your flooring looking good as new for longer. Make sure you clean it with non-abrasive cleaners so that it doesn’t ruin your flooring.
- Is durable – If you treat your flooring right it will last a long time. ensuring that it is cleaned regularly and treated when needed will mean your flooring is kept at its best for longer. Keep pets claws short and don’t let people wear outdoor shoes (and in particular stiletto heels) on the flooring to stop it from getting scratched.
- It adds value to your home – Parquet flooring is something that buyers often look for when looking at a possible house to buy or rent. Having this type of flooring will make your home stand out for potential buyers.
The cons of parquet flooring
- It fades easily – If you plan to install the flooring in a room that gets a lot of sunlight bare in mind that it will fade over time. In our living room, we have two areas that get a lot of sunlight and the rest none at all so we are very conscious about this for our wooden flooring.
- It’s not moisture resistant – Although your flooring will take a little bit of moisture and heat resistance it isn’t moisture resistant and shouldn’t be installed in areas that are prone to damp or wet conditions such basements or bathrooms.
- It scratches easily – I’ve already mentioned about your flooring being easy to look after. This type of flooring is prone to scratching so make sure pets have their claws clipped regularly and that no one wears their outdoor shoes inside.
- Have it installed – Although you could probably install the flooring yourself sometimes it is easier to get the professionals in to do the job. This can cost a lot of money though as it can be a time-consuming job especially if you want an intricate pattern adding or have lots of pieces of wood that need cutting down to size.
