How to make the most of your outdoor space this autumn

If you are lucky enough to live in a home that enables you to have an outside space, 2020 is most likely the year you will have spent the most time in it and making the most of it.

However, like most home improvement tasks, the garden is an area of the home that should never be neglected–if left for too long, the prospect of gardening could become increasingly daunting and soon begin to feel impossible.

If it’s something you’ve been putting off, why not make the autumn your opportunity to make the changes in your garden so you can enjoy it more in 2021 and beyond?

Work on the layout

Each person’s outside space is truly unique to the home it is attached to. Maybe you just have a small plot of lawn with flower beds surrounding it, or you have a large amount of paving stones? Either of these spaces comes with a great deal of potential. You’ll need to consider the things that will maximise the space that you have. This means working on the natural flow of the garden to suit your lifestyle and home. Do you have a back door that is easily accessible to the kitchen? Creating a patio or decking space here will mean that you can create an outdoor eating area. You could even create a herb garden so you have access to fresh herbs that last throughout the year to improve on your outdoor cooking.

Think about the things that you and your family need to make the most of the outdoors and create a space reflective of that.

Outdoor Storage

The amount of storage matters when it comes to the functionality of the home and the garden is no different at all. Most gardens will have rickety old sheds home to spiders and rusty old garden tools–and it might be time to give that a clean and a lick of paint. Alternatively, check out Whatshed for a wide range of new sheds that can improve on the function and appearance of your garden. For avid year round veggie growers, it might be time to look into a small greenhouse or polytunnels. Outdoor storage boxes can come with outdoor cushioned seats- meaning that you get the practicality of both storage and sitting space!

The Social Space

While the garden is a great source of escapism for some, it’s also a great space to have outside gatherings. Adding a social element to your garden can really improve the space. Garden furniture can be expensive but is always something that people are looking to replace. If you’re willing to put in a bit of sanding and paintwork, you can get decent outdoor furniture sets from various second-hand websites. Large outdoor cushions, hammocks,  and bean bags are also a great addition to creating a relaxing social space in the garden.

Having access to a garden is truly special. Follow these considerations to help you to make the best of the space that you have.
