Choosing The Right Engagement Ring

Regular readers will know that I am soon to be wed – in less than 11 weeks in fact!!! When we booked it seemed so far away now it’s scarily close.

Matthew and I have been engaged now for what seems like forever but I remember the day we went looking for engagement rings like it was yesterday. I knew exactly what I wanted and when I saw it in the shop window I knew it would be mine. It wasn’t very expensive but to me, that was never even a factor.

If you and your significant other are engaged and going to buy a ring or perhaps you’re looking for a ring before popping the question you might be unsure about the ring you’d like – there are so many to choose from the task can be quite daunting and lets face it your engagement ring is an important ring so you want to get it right.

If you’re unsure what ring to choose you’ve come to the right place as I have some things you might want to take into consideration before choosing the perfect engagement ring.

The Material

Personally, I am a big fan of yellow gold and almost all of the jewellery I own is made from yellow gold so there was no other option for me when it came to my engagement ring. My best friend, on the other hand, prefers white metals and her rings are made from Platinum. Whether you like gold, silver, rose gold, platinum or titanium there are plenty of choices out there. Some metals are more hardwearing than others so this might be worth considering especially if your intended has a job that involves a lot of hard work on their hands you may want to choose a ring made from a harder material.

A stone or no stone

Traditionally engagement rings contain a stone – usually a diamond but this doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. If you do choose a ring with a stone will it be a diamond? if not what stone will it have, will you opt for a ring that has more than one type of stone?. You could look for rings that contain their birthstone or favourite jewel.

Once you have decided on the type of stone the ring will have then you need to decide what shape the setting will be. I love my solitaire diamond but I am also a fan of small clusters of stones too. Will the stone be round, square, teardrop or heart-shaped? I know I say this a lot but there really is so many types of rings to choose from that you will be spoilt for choice. Maybe put the feelers out with your beloved so that you have an idea as to the ring they would like.

New or Vintage

Vintage engagement rings are a popular choice at the moment. They look really elegant and sophisticated and can be purchased from various sources at reasonable prices. Depending on what your partner likes you could buy an antique ring or a new ring that is styled to look like a vintage design.

The Price

Price isn’t really something that should be a factor when choosing the perfect engagement ring, however, if you are on a budget bare this in mind as the last thing anyone should be doing is getting themselves in a massive amount of debt for a ring. As with everything though, you get what you pay for. If you are wanting a good clarity/carat of diamond you will need to be prepared to pay a higher price. Having said that, there are beautiful rings at very reasonable prices, the key is to look around, wait for the sales or maybe even consider looking in a pawn shop where you just might the perfect ring at a fraction of the price.

There’s no right or wrong decision when it comes to the engagement ring as long as you and most importantly your other half are happy with your choice.
