How To Create The Perfect Playroom

If you have a spare room in your home you might have a few ideas rolling around your head about what you’d like to do with the space. If you have small children and don’t already have one in your home you might decide to transform this area into a playroom.

I would have loved the boys to have a playroom when they were little but alas we have never had the space. These days they are too old for a playroom but they would love a games room if we had a spare room.

What to consider before creating a playroom

Decorate the room

First things first, the room is going to need is a lick of paint or wallpapering. Why not choose paints or papers that contain bright colours. If your children like drawing you could turn a wall into a blackboard using specialised paint so that they have a place to draw in chalk.

Replace the flooring

A child sits on an adult's lap in the playroom, reading a picture book about a fox who has lost his socks. Colourful illustrations and other books are scattered nearby on the floor.

When it comes to choosing the right flooring for your playroom you might want to consider what things your children will be doing in there. Will it be an area where they will craft or messy play or just an area where they play with their toys and read their books? If you plan on lots of messy play you might want to consider a wood flooring that can easily be cleaned should any spills or messes occur. If you are worried about your little ones slipping on a wooden flooring you can add rugs or rubber backed mats. You could even decide to carpet the room and have a small area that they use for messy play with a wooden floor.

Buy some furniture

You won’t need a lot of furniture in a child’s playroom as I imagine it would be full of toys – with 3 boys they used to have tons and tons of toys between them. A small sofa would be a great piece of furniture to have in a playroom along with a small table and chairs.

A stuffed bear sits on a sofa, ready for hugs and playtime—perfect for adding charm to any playroom.

It would also be sensible to add toy storage to your playroom. We all know that the majority of children’s toys have lots of bits and there is nothing worse than trying to find pieces or put things away when there is no space for them. You might want to consider a storage unit that is able to house storage boxes – we have a couple of units from Ikea in our living room that are great for storing shoes, toys and craft items. You might want to consider adding a bookshelf to the room too so that all your little ones favourite books are in one place. If you are going to add any furniture of this nature to a playroom as with any other room in your home you should make sure they are secured so that they are unable to be moved or pulled over by curious little ones.

Are you planning a new playroom for your children? or do they already have one? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below
