What To Do With Your Spare Room

If you are lucky enough to have a spare room in your home you might be struggling to decide on how to use that space. There are so many possibilities – you could choose to use the room for one purpose or multiple things.

We don’t have a spare room in our home at the minute but I would love to have one. My work often means I’m sat at my desk for hours on end in a corner of the living room. It can also take up a lot of space especially when I have photos to take. I wouldn’t change my job as I love it but sometimes it can be annoying having to pack everything away only to need it all the next day too. That being said the boys are all getting older and they won’t be at home forever. I have mixed emotions about this as it means I’ll get some much-needed space in the house but it also means that they’re all growing up and will be leaving the nest (hopefully not for the next 5 or so years).

You might decide to use your spare room as a guest bedroom, games room, home office or crafting area. I would definitely have a guest bedroom and an office (if we had two spare rooms) so that I could separate my work from my everyday life.

Whatever you decide to do with your spare room you might want to give it a makeover. This is a perfect time to do this and having a blank canvas makes things much easier in the long run. You might…

Have a clearout

Now is the perfect time to remove all the items you no longer want or need from the room you are making over or even other rooms in your home. Remember to reduce, reuse and recycle in your planning. Anything that can be sold or donated will save items from landfills and will give you extra spending for new items.

Decorate

It is easier to prep, paint and/or wallpaper a room when it is empty so it makes sense to do this right at the start. Depending on the use of the room will depend on how you decorate it but I always think you can’t go far wrong with neutral colours and a feature wall in any room.

Flooring

There is nothing better in a newly decorated room than a nice soft carpet or rug under your feet. If you are turning your spare room into a guest bedroom or home office a carpeted floor would be great. If you are planning to use the space for crafting you might decide that laminate or vinyl flooring is best for this so that it can be cleaned easier after a crafting session.

Add accessories and furniture

Lastly, you will need to add furniture to your room. Whether it be bedroom furniture, a desk and storage for your home office or a workstation for your crafting. Choose items that can be used for a long time rather than a short time this will save you money and time in the long run.

Adding little touches like wall art, lamps and shades, light fittings and candles will give your room a cosy, homely feel and finish it off perfectly.

Do you have a spare room? If so what are your plans for it? If you don’t have one would you like one?
