A Few Tips For Making Moving Home Easier

I’ve written a few times in the past about moving home and our hopes to move back closer to my family in the future. I know that now isn’t the right time but as the boys get older it is something that we think would be a great decision for us all. Until the time is right or I win the lottery (whichever happens first) I will continue to search for our perfect home and prepare for when the time eventually comes.

Once you have decided that you want to move, you need to get your home in order. If you are a homeowner you will need to get your home valued and ready to be sold and once you have found a new home possibly a new mortgage. If you rent your home you need to ensure that you give your landlord the correct amount of notice needed to end your tenancy and possibly spend time putting your home back to how it was when you first moved in especially if anything is damaged. Once all of this is sorted then you are ready to organise the big move.

If you’re already in the throws of organising a move you will know how stressful and time consuming it can be to sort everything out but there are steps you can take to make the move easier for everyone involved.

My tips include:

Taking your time

Don’t rush when it comes to moving. Set a date that is practical for everyone involved. If you can move in a day or two after you have been given the keys so that you can clean and decorate if needed.

When it comes to packing, go through all your belongings as you’re boxing them up. Take time to wrap breakable items so that they can be moved to your new home safely.

Now is also a great time to have a clear out of all the things you no longer use or need.

Hiring professionals

If you don’t have a lot of stuff sometimes it’s easier to move it on your own especially if you have family or friends who are on hand to help. However, more often than not it’s both easier and cheaper in the long run if you hire professional movers especially a company that offers removal services at affordable prices. This is especially important if you are trying to keep the costs of your move down. It’s not easy or cheap moving home in the first place so if you need to buy new carpets or other furnishings any savings you can make the better. Asking for help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you’ve pets or young children ask family and friends if they can help with packing or on the day of the move so that you can focus on moving all your belongings from A to B without the worry of your children or pets getting in the way, hurt or upset by all the hustle and bustle.

Expect the unexpected

Everyone wants their move to go as smoothly as possible that’s a given but sometimes the unexpected happens and you find yourself in a sticky situation. I’ve had friends put holes in walls, burst pipes (I don’t even know how that happened), scratch wallpaper and even break all their crockery when moving home in the past. Can you imagine getting to your new home and not having a cup for a cup of tea or a plate to eat your tea from? No me either – but I can tell you my friend had to make a dash to a supermarket to get a new set of plates.
