Thinking Ahead To Our Next Family Holiday

Since returning home from New York I have been itching to book another holiday. It’s weird isn’t it that until you do something you forget how much fun it can be. It’s been a long time since we’ve been away on holiday – probably about 7 years since our last family holiday and about 8 years since Matthew and I went to Amsterdam on a mini cruise (it recently came up in my Facebook memories). It’s actually a little scary to think that it’s been so long since we’ve been away but life has a real habit of throwing things in the way. With that said no more are we going to leave it so long and we’re even planning a family holiday for next summer, the question is where do go?

It’s never been easier to travel around the world the only problem is choosing as there is just so much choice. It can be difficult choosing where to go and how long to stay and obviously, budget and time are both factors that need to be given some consideration too. For us, we have to choose our holidays in the school holidays with the three boys and their brother all in full-time education taking a holiday out of term time isn’t an option for us.

Home or Away

The first thing to think about I suppose is will we stay in the UK or go abroad? We used to go to the Lake District almost every year when we were younger it’s somewhere I’d love to go back to with the boys and definitely somewhere I will visit often when we have our motorhome (that is the next big spend in our house unless I win the lottery sometime soon).

As the boys have never been abroad before I would probably consider somewhere like Malta, Spain, Italy or the Canary Islands for our first trip abroad as they’re all pretty family-friendly and not too far away on a plane.

Action or Laidback

Next on my list would be to think if we were going to spend our time relaxing by a pool or on the beach or whether we would go for a winter sports holiday where the boys could learn to ski should they wish. Either way, I would see what Mark Warner Holidays could offer us as they have a range of holidays to suit families with children of all ages.

We are thinking about taking the boys to America in a few years time. I would love to take them to Disneyland or Universal in Orlando but it’s only so I can see all the characters and visit the Harry Potter theme park but shhh because they think its really all about them being able to enjoy all the big rides.

A City Break

It’s been two and a half months since we were walking the streets of New York and almost every day since returning I’ve wished to be back. It was amazing (I’ve said that a lot too) and will definitely be going back in a few years time if not sooner. I’m glad that we didn’t take the boys with us – not that they wouldn’t have enjoyed it but my anxiety would have been through the roof especially when we were delayed. Although I know a lot of people take their children on city breaks this isn’t something we would look at just yet so for us somewhere that is reasonably quiet with cities and towns we can visit would definitely be a good option for us.

A Roadtrip

Last year my friend took her family on a road trip across America, they have a holiday home in Florida so visit often but last year she wanted to do something different. We’ve always said we’d love to take the boys and drive the whole of Route 66. I’m not sure how doable that actually is for us in the near future but it’s certainly something that I need to research and look into. Until then I will dream about having my own motorhome too so that we can travel all over the UK and Europe.
