#SleepForDogs – Why You Should Let Sleeping Dogs Lie
Did you know that just like us, it’s important that a dog has a good sleep routine for a healthy and happy life? We have always had dogs in our family and our lives would be pretty empty without them. Last year we sadly lost our Boxer dog Pepper she was almost 13 years old even now all these months later she is greatly missed and we still look for her around the house.
She could always be found laying or sleeping in the most inconvenient of places – usually by my feet whilst I worked or in the kitchen when I was baking or cooking a meal and although I used to curse when I tripped over her I’d give anything to be able to have her still “in my way”.
One thing is for sure though is that she loved her sleep, the same can be said for our French Bulldog Ziggy he is always asleep and quite often his snoring is louder than the TV.
A dog sleeps for between 12 and 15 hours a day (a puppy will sleep for 18 hours a day) so it’s important to ensure that they have the right conditions in which to get this much needed sleep. If you have a dog or are thinking of getting one this is something that you need to take into consideration, take a look at the Doggy Do Little campaign page for more information.
To enable your dog to get the right amount of sleep consider the following…
- Where will your dog sleep – a crate or a bed or will it have both? Make sure that they have a soft cushion so that they can sleep in comfort.
- Give your dog a quiet and relaxing place to sleep – not in your bed or in a busy room but a space where they can go themselves if they wish. This will also ensure that the sleep they do get is of good quality – as will your own sleep too
- Make sure your dog goes to the toilet last thing at night and first thing in the morning. If it is a puppy you may have to wake and let it out during the night too until it is house trained. By getting your pooch into a good routine will mean that they will get a good nights sleep.
- Be careful what you feed your pooch – make sure that the food doesn’t have too many additives in and is correct for the breed of your dog. If your dog is a small breed you do not want to be feeding it food that is created for a working dog or larger dog as it could make it very unwell.
Do you own a dog? Did you know how much sleep they needed?
