Preparing Your Garden for Spring

Spring might still be a little while off, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start getting your outdoor living space prepared. In fact, now is a great time to start turning your attention towards the garden, particularly if there are any big renovation jobs you need to get done in amongst your busy schedule.

When you look out into your garden, does it look inviting or is it in need of a little work before spring arrives? If it’s the latter, then just keep reading!

Keeping Things Stress-Free

A high maintenance garden just isn’t going to work when you’re busy enjoying time with your family, but luckily, there are a few changes you can make in your garden to keep things easy-to-manage and stress-free this spring.

Start by figuring out which parts of your garden are eating up the majority of your time, is it the hedges that constantly need cutting back? The lawn that always needs mowing? Or the deck that needs to be sanded, stained and sealed to keep it looking good? Click here for more lawn mowing tips.

Whatever it is, there are plenty of low maintenance alternatives you can choose from that will have you spending less time worrying about the garden and more time enjoying it.

Composite Decking

If you want to keep the charm of the real wood in your garden, composite decking is a really great option. It’s very similar to wood in the way it looks and even the way it feels underfoot, but it’s made with plastic polymers so it won’t need to be stained or sealed at all.

Better yet, you can use your composite decking offcuts to create gorgeous planters that will bloom with all your favourite flowers during spring. The kids will love planting the seeds and watching the shoots appear in the sunshine. Why not try marigolds, sunflowers or sweet peas to get things going?

Porcelain Paving

If you’re more of a patio person, you might find porcelain paving a great new addition to your garden. Porcelain paving is different from natural stone that’s often used in gardens because it’s vitrified at a high temperature. This makes it resistant to scratches, scuffs and chips – perfect if you’ll have little ones running around or riding their bikes in the garden this spring.

Just like composite decking, porcelain paving is designed with minimal maintenance in mind, requiring only a quick wash down with soapy water when it’s time for a freshen up. This is a great option if you’ll have pets with muddy paws or children with messy ice creams visiting your garden in the warmer months.

Accessories

Adding accessories to your garden is a simple way to give it a refreshing new look for spring. With so many home and garden stores out there, your choice of accessories is really limitless, but here are a few ideas that might spark your imagination.

  • An outdoor table – perfect for dining alfresco
  • A BBQ – for springtime family gatherings
  • An umbrella – to shield you from the sunny (or shower-y) days
  • An outdoor heater – to take the chill off in the evenings

Hopefully, this will help you get your garden looking ship-shape prior to spring. Be sure to tag me in your photos if you do give these ideas a try!
