Preparing Your Child for their First Day of School
Starting a new school can feel overwhelming for young children and their families. There is a lot to organise and your child will need plenty of reassurance before this big milestone.
With plenty of planning and a positive attitude, you can help your child to start school feeling happy, confident and ready to learn!
Whether your child is preparing for their first day at school or they are returning to a new class after the holidays, here is some helpful advice from an independent girls’ school in London…
Many children struggle with changes to their usual routine. The best way to help your child adjust to a new school routine is to introduce it as early as possible. Get them used to earlier bedtimes and encourage your child to get up early and eat breakfast before they start their new school.
It is really important to practise things like getting dressed, going to the toilet and using a knife and fork before your child starts school. Learning how to do these things independently will help your child to feel more confident about changing for PE and eating in the school canteen.
Try to purchase school uniform as early as possible and let your child try it on. This way you can make sure that all items fit comfortably and you have everything you need. You should also check that your child has all necessary school supplies, such as a water bottle and stationery, and ensure that all items are clearly labelled with their names.
To help your child get used to school work, you could create a special place for them to study at home. Set up a desk area or a reading corner with plenty of books and craft supplies.
By preparing for school as early as possible you will help your child to feel more relaxed and confident about their first day.
