Setting up the Perfect Study Space for Your Child
At home, learning can be a real challenge, something most parents have learned the hard way over the last year or so. Even now that the kids are (thankfully) back at school, there’s still the nightly homework to be done. Creating a space suitable for your child to study can really help to keep them focused. An independent school in Somerset has shared their top 5 tips to help you set up the perfect study space at home, keep reading to find out more.
Tip No.1: Find Somewhere Quiet
We don’t all have the luxury of an at home office. If you do, excellent, proceed to Tip No.2. Otherwise, you’ll want to find somewhere in your home with minimal foot traffic to ensure your child can crack on with their homework uninterrupted. A dining room works well, or even their bedroom, as long as you check in and make sure they’re not getting side-tracked with something else when they should be working.
Tip No.2: Get Rid of The Electronics
Your child shouldn’t be anywhere near an iPad, TV or mobile phone whilst they’re attempting to study as electronic devices are extremely distracting. If your child needs to complete their work on an iPad or computer and you want to make sure they aren’t scrolling instead of studying, you can download apps that restrict social media and game sites for limited periods of time.
Tip No.3: Always Be Prepared
Make sure their designated study space is equipped with everything they might need. Having to get up to hunt for a piece of stationary or a textbook will interrupt their flow. Double check that everything is in one place before they get started.
Tip No.4: Get a Clock
Being able to keep an eye on the time will help to keep children on task. Set reasonable time limits for homework and position a clock nearby so that they can make sure they stick to them. Feeling like you have endless time to complete a task can be a killer for efficiency, but a little bit of time pressure can give kids the push to get their heads down.
Tip No.5: Think About Lighting
It may sound obvious, but good lighting is important in an effective work environment, so make sure their study space is brightly lit. A cosy, lamp-lit room may be wonderful for winding down and relaxing but it’s not ideal for maintaining concentration and focus.
