How do you pack like a professional mover? Here’s what you need to know

Packing up your house can feel quite overwhelming. You’ve literally got to gather up everything you own in the world and get it ready to be stacked in a van or a car – no mean feat, clearly, despite how common moving house might be nowadays.

As anyone who’s moved house a few times will know, packing is somewhat of an art form, and it’s important that you take active steps to perfect your approach. If you’re hoping to learn how to pack like a professional mover, then here’s what you need to know.

Label everything

The first thing that any professional removals team like Bright Movers will tell you about packing is the importance of labelling. It’s horrible to have stacks and stacks of boxes with no idea where to put them in the new home or what they contain.

As you’re packing up, make sure that you label every box, including information such as who the contents belong to, what room it should be in, and important items you might need. Make sure that the labels are visible on multiple sides so that they don’t get hidden when they’re stacked.

Don’t overpack boxes

It’s common that people just try to jam as many items into each box as possible to try to economise on space. While this might be appropriate with some items, such as insulated clothing or other light items, with heavier pieces this can be counterproductive.

Not only can it make it pretty difficult to carry the boxes around, but it can also lead to them splitting open mid-move. Try to keep this in mind, so that you don’t end up with some boxes that are super lightweight and others that are super heavy.

Don’t pack daily use items too early

While it’s important to start thinking about packing at least a few weeks before the move, you need to take a strategic approach. Start by packing up items you don’t need at the moment – items such as books, and clothes that don’t match the current season – but make sure that you don’t pack daily-use items too early.

If you pack up your toothbrush or coffee maker a week before the actual move, you’ll be kicking yourself hours later when you’re trying to find those items.

Protect your fragile possessions

Lastly, it’s important that you take the time to properly protect your fragile items. Wrap up electronic devices in duvets or blankets, and make sure that the boxes are also labelled as fragile.

It can seem like a bit of a waste of time when you’re actually doing it, but if it means that you end up with fewer broken items as a result, it’s definitely worth it.

Learning to pack like a professional mover takes a bit of practice, but if you’re prepared to take the time, it can make the moving process a whole lot more manageable. By labelling everything, not overpacking your boxes, and protecting your fragile items, you can start to transform your move from something you dread into something that’s at least slightly less tiresome.
