Helping Your Child Manage Exam Stress
Exam period is a difficult time for young people, even if they tend to thrive academically. They are under a lot of pressure to perform well, which is a lot to shoulder for someone so young. With that said, parents should try their best to support their child more than ever during this time so that they don’t feel too overwhelmed. Here’s some advice on how to do so from an A Level college in Wales.
Remind your child regularly that you are proud of them for the effort they’re putting into their exam revision, rather than the results they achieve. As long as they are trying their best, that is all you can ask for. If they think that you are going to be disappointed in them for not receiving top grades across all their subjects, they will feel far more stressed than if they know that you are proud of them regardless of the outcome.
Check in with your child to find out how they are coping and let them know that they can talk to you about any issues whenever they want. Bottling up their emotions will make them feel even more anxious, so be patient with them when they are venting. Give them a chance to speak to you on a one-to-one basis as they may not feel comfortable opening up in front of the rest of the family. Try and radiate positivity within your family home and shield them from any of your own stress, so that your child doesn’t have to worry about personal issues on top of their exam worries.
You also need to make sure that your child is taking care of themselves during exam period. Spending hours locked up in their bedroom in front of their textbooks and revision guides will not guarantee the best results. They need to take breaks so that they can exercise, get some fresh air and eat a healthy diet. If they don’t they will put themselves at risk of illness and they’ll be in no fit state to revise or attend exams.
