Four Things We Want To Achieve In The Next 10 Years

Some say you should never plan for anything – best-laid plans and all that but personally I think you have to plan some things or else what are you actually living for? Matthew and I have been together 13 years and looking back we’ve been quite busy.

We’ve had children, pets,  mini breaks, moved house, bought numerous cars but we’re yet to do any of the “big” things grown-ups do. Recently we sat down together and made a list of some of the things we’d like to achieve in the next 10 years and these are just four items on it.

A Wedding

This is at the very top of the list. We have been engaged for so long neither of us can actually remember when it officially happened. It wasn’t even remotely romantic we both just kept joking saying when we’re married and one day Matthew said I’d best buy you a ring so we can actually get married and that was that.

Neither of us likes to be the centre of attention so we are still planning on running away to New York and having a 5-minute ceremony at City Hall. On our return, we will celebrate with our family and friends but it will just be a big family get together with a big buffet, a few (ok maybe more than a few) alcoholic beverages and lots of dancing.

Deposit For A New Home

Although we’ve spoken about possibly buying the home we live in at the minute, we are considering moving closer to my family again in the next few years this would allow the boys to grow up in the same village I did as a child and still be close enough to spend time with my mum and dad. Although the beach didn’t appeal to me as a young teenager I’d love to be able to walk the dogs down the lanes near where I grew up. As much as I’d love to buy a five bedroomed new build they are so out of our budget so we’d be looking at a modest three bedroomed semi detached with a largish garden.

Home Renovations

Once we’ve bought our new home, renovations would definitely be on the list of things to do. Everyone wants to add their own stamp on to their dream home, don’t they? If it didn’t already have one I’d add a two-storey extension to include a utility room, downstairs toilet, garage, conservatory and an extra bedroom with an ensuite.

Buy A Motor Home

This is the long-term goal but who is to say that this might happen before we buy a new home. Who knows we might just stay where we are and travel a lot – there are a lot of possibilities. I do know that I want to visit different places all over Europe but the thought of being stuck in traffic in a car fills me with dread and starts my anxieties off but the thought of having my own home from home and being stuck in it really doesn’t sound so bad. I’d be happy with my kindle and I’d even have my own toilet so should we get stuck for ages I’d be ok.

Ways We Could Fund Our Dreams

It goes without saying you should save where you can and it makes sense to have a rainy day pot so that should the worst happen you have a safety net. This isn’t always possible and more often than not once one thing has been saved for other things need fixing or replacing. Our pot is being used to pay for our wedding at the minute but once that has been paid for we will be saving again for something else off our list.

Help From Family
My parents have always told us that they’d help towards our wedding, but since we’re going to do it in New York and just the 2 of us, they both said that they might be able to pay some of the deposit on a house instead. They own their own homes already so know just how hard it is to get onto the property ladder. They also know how important the investment is, they used this calculator to show us how much their house has made them, and why buying is so important.
A Loan

Although getting into debt isn’t a good idea so long as you are sure you can afford the repayments I don’t see the harm in borrowing money. In the past, we have had loans to buy things and without them, we’d never be able to have the things we wanted. It is important to always check your finances before taking out loans as who knows what could happen further down the line and to make sure you make your payments on time as missed or late payments can have a negative effect on your credit score and could mean that you can’t get credit in the future.

What plans do you have for the future?
