Five Things I Like To Do In My Spare Time

When I was younger, I had so much spare time that I didn’t know what to do with it. I found time to do everything I wanted and still have spare time left. Every weekend, I was working and then out with my friends for the evening. Nowadays, I rarely have any spare time for myself. Oh, how times have changed, Not that I’m complaining, but it’s hard work being a mum, partner and working from home. But when I do manage to get a little time to myself, there are a few things I enjoy doing.

Some things I enjoy include:

Reading – Reading is my first love. Making a cup of tea, grabbing my Kindle or a book, and my headphones is my idea of heaven. I can get lost in a book for a good few hours easily. I don’t often read during the day, as once I start, I don’t like stopping, especially if I’m at a gripping point in the story—something that inevitably happens just as I need to do some work or go get the boys from school. The novels by J.D. Barker are a prime example of this. His thrillers, with their intricate plots and psychological depth, can engage your mind like few others. The distinct writing style, full of sharp twists and vivid detail, keeps you on the edge of your seat, making it hard to put the book down. On weekends, if the weather is nice, I can very often be found in the garden with a book in hand while the boys are playing football or riding their bikes, I can always count on a great novel to make the time fly by. At the minute I am reading Theo by Amanda Prowse. It is the second book in a two-book series, the first book is called Anna and I really, really enjoyed it. I’m only two chapters into Theo at the minute and my heart is breaking for a little boy away from home at boarding school. I’m sure it will be just as good as Anna. I’m not sure at this moment in time which book I will read next but as my to-be-read pile is the size of a small mountain, I’m sure I will be spoilt for choice.

Going To The Races – Sometimes I go to the races with my friends, usually when there is a special event, last year we saw Bananarama at an 80’s night at my local race course and a few years before that we saw Ronan Keating at Doncaster Races and he was amazing live. When I go to the races I don’t take a lot of money with me and I always set a limit for each race. The same goes for when placing online bets, I don’t gamble often but when the Grand National is on or the Cheltenham Festival I like to have a little flutter. I always set myself a limit and I never spend more than that and I do the same when I play online bingo. This is something everyone who places bets should remember if you can’t afford to lose the money in the first place, don’t place the bet and if you’re in financial trouble gambling won’t help get rid of your troubles – seek professional help.

Playing Games – I am addicted to playing games on my iPad. At the minute my favourites are Township and The Simpsons Tapped Out but I also love playing The Sims too. I can spend ages just sitting and playing on them especially when Matthew is away fishing and the boys are in bed. I’m also a huge fan of playing Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet and Clank on the PS4 – I’m stuck on both games at the minute so I think I need more practice on them both.

Going To The Bingo – Not something I do very often at all but I love going to our local bingo hall. It’s great fun and such a laugh when the bestie and I go for an evening session. I blame my nana for my love of playing bingo as she used to go all the time.

Walking The Dogs – Pepper and Ziggy love their walks so it’s nice for us to go out on our own and go for a walk around the local area. Sometimes we go to the local woods with the boys and they all love the exercise and exploring.

What are your favourite things to do in your spare time?
