Top Tips for Choosing a School for Your Child

When the time comes to choose a new school for your child, whether they are just starting or moving up to secondary school, you will probably feel a massive weight on your shoulders. It is such a big decision and should involve some meticulous planning. There are, of course, lots of different elements to consider, some more obvious than others. Think About What’s Important to Your Family

Before you begin researching various schools, think about what’s important to you, your child and your family as a whole. For instance, does the school need to be within walking distance from your home or at least on a handy bus route? Does your child have any special educational needs? Would you prefer they attend a single-sex or a co-educational school? Does there need to be boarding facilities?

Research Online

Once you have a clearer idea of what you’re looking for, you can start researching online. The schools’ websites should feature things like their latest inspection reports, the curriculum and the facilities. Consider whether they offer any extra-curricular activities that might be of interest to your son or daughter and try and find out whether their pastoral care is up to scratch. Once you’ve done your research you will be able to shortlist your favourite schools.

Visit the Schools

Once you’ve got your shortlist, you should try and book in some visits. There’s no better way to get a true insight into the school if you don’t take a look around and speak to some of the teachers and existing students. During your visit, consider whether the school feels warm and welcoming. Is it safe and clean? Ask lots of questions and think about whether they are answered in a friendly manner that makes you feel comfortable. It’s probably best if you have a list of questions ready before your visit so that you cover everything whilst you’re there.

Ask Your Child What They Think

It’s crucial to involve your child in the decision of which school to send them too. They are the one who will be spending the majority of their time there for the foreseeable future so it’s important that they feel happy with the decision.
