A Few Things To Consider When Starting Up A Business

Last year I became self-employed and if I’m honest, it was a little bit daunting. There is a lot of information online and this added to my confusion as it was just too much all at once. I knew what I wanted to do and knew that I could make money but I wasn’t sure how or where to start the process. After talking to a friend I found that the best place to start was the Gov.uk website. Here you will find everything you need to know. I like that the detailed information is in easy to read sections and covers everything from registering your business to paying your tax bill. I’m not going to go into the ins and outs on how to set up your business but I do want to give you a few things to consider for now or in the future as there are so many things that you should consider before they may or may not happen.

Your business type

If you are working for yourself, you need to register as a sole trader but if you are planning to go into business with a friend or acquaintance then this is a partnership and needs to be registered as such. It is important that you make sure you are registered as the right business type so that your tax can be calculated at the correct rate amongst many other things.

Do plan to expand

This might be something you’ve not thought about. If the business is still relatively young then it’s probably not crossed your mind at all, but if your business takes off better than expected or you find you can’t manage on your own you may need to take on extra staff to help with the workload.

Do you need a business consultant

If you want some advice on the ways you can expand your business you may want to speak to a business consultant. Trevor McClintock offers packages to suit businesses of all shapes and sizes. He will help you get the best from your business and help you so that it runs more efficiently – saving you both time and money. A business consultant will look at your business as a whole and see where improvements can be made, this might mean a rejig in the staff structure or a change in the way you do something. For instance, if you have a supplement business, they may recommend updating the packaging and suggest blister pack manufacturers. This is because blister packs often stand out visually much better than those in boxes and offer product protection too. Rest assured a consultant will help you get the best from your business.

Keep your accounts in order

Keep a clear record of all the money you have made through your business and all the expenses you have paid. You will need these when it comes to filing your tax return. I am yet to do my first tax return but I have my records clearly marked out so that it will be easy to complete once I receive my letter in the new tax year. You may find it easier to have an accountant who will do all the hard work for you. Depending on the size of our business / the amount of money you are making you may find it easier to have an account from the start.

I hope you found the above information helpful. Remember these are just a few things of the things you may want to take into consideration when starting your business. They are just my opinions and you should seek professional advice if you are unsure of what is required from you and your business in terms of tax and assessment.
