Supporting Your Child with their Mental Health

Mental health will always be critical to your child’s growth, and it’s important that it’s prioritised when they’re learning and experiencing new things. Contrary to popular belief, it’s known that children can struggle with their mental health from a young age, and it’s important to give your child the love and attention they deserve.

To help your child with their mental health, here are some top tips.

Give your child the attention they need

It’s tempting to fall into similar habits where you allow your child to be left to their own devices, but it’s also the time when your child may well need that extra support. While you shouldn’t feel the need to overwhelm your child and be there constantly watching over them you should try to pop your head in every day to make sure they’re okay. A lot of people that struggle with mental health tend to keep things bottled up.

Explore what your child’s school can offer

Plenty of schools are there to support your child just as much as help them to succeed in their studies and exams. Wellbeing and care for children are paramount in all schools and you and your child should become familiar with them. Teachers and other staff are there to support your child, so it’s important that you explore these options should your child feel nervous to talk to their parents about their issues.

Find activities your child can use as a distraction

Having different activities to keep your child occupied will help them with figuring out what could work best if they’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Your child may like reading a book to unwind or spending a few hours with their friends. Distractions often help children learn how to cope better and work on their resilience. And it helps your child find what they really enjoy doing in life.
