Should You Delegate Wedding Duties To Friends?
A number of duties need to be taken care of during a wedding. These include catering, entertainment, hair & beauty, photography and chauffeuring just to name a few. A lot of couples choose to hire professionals to take care of these duties, however, others call upon their network of friends and family. Whilst the latter can be cheaper, there are disadvantages to using friends. Here are just a few of the questions that you may want to ask yourself before trusting friends to take over wedding duties.
How well do you know them?
When considering whether to take on a friend or relative, consider how well you know them. Close friends and family members may be easier to trust with important duties such as photography or catering, but these are also the people that you want celebrating your day with you. If they’re handling important responsibilities, they may not be able to drink or join in the partying.
Distant relatives and friends of friends could be a better choice for delegating tasks to. Of course, you do still need to be sure that you can trust them – it’s worth getting recommendations off of other friends and relatives.
Do they have professional experience?
Some friends and relatives may have professional experience making them excellent choices for staffing your wedding. For instance, if your best friend is a stylist by trade, it could be worthwhile taking them on as stylist at your wedding. Wedding-related experience should be preferential as these special occasions often come with their own set of rules (for instance, whilst your friend may be a professional stylist, they may not have experience working with bridal updos and bridal make-up).
Taking on friends with little or no professional experience is a big gamble and isn’t recommended in most cases. For instance, just because your uncle may have turntables at home may not make him qualified to curate an entire wedding playlist – you’re much better off hiring a wedding DJ who knows how to read the crowd and keep the music flowing. A website or social media pages is always a good sign that they’re serious and not just a hobbyist.
Are you on a tight budget?
Hiring friends to handle duties at your wedding is a great way to save costs and could be handy if you’re on a tight budget. However, if you’re able to splash out on professionals, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t spend that extra money. When you hire a professional, you know that you’re going to get a professional service and you’ve got more protection if something goes wrong.
