Helping Your Child Develop Critical Thinking Skills

The world we live in is complex and rich with information. Building on skills has become more important than ever for individuals to successfully navigate their way through life with ease. Amongst all of them, learning to think critically may possibly be one of the most important skills that children can learn, and will need for their future. Children need to be able to do more than repeat a list of facts that they learnt from a textbook. Understanding how to make sense of the information they’re given and analyse it, is needed for the rapidly changing world that we live in. As a parent, you play a vital role in helping your child develop this skill. Here is some advice from this independent school in West Sussex, on helping your child develop their critical thinking skills.

Encourage curiosity

Do your best to create an environment that encourages and values curiosity and questions. Encourage your child to ask as many questions as they want about the world around them, and to explore different views, seeking answers through methods that they find exciting and interesting. Go out of your way to take part in meaningful conversations that encourage critical thinking. For example, when they ask a question, avoid giving them a direct answer immediately. Instead, show them how to think critically by asking open-ended questions, and showing them how to reflect on their thoughts and opinions.

Problem solving

Provide your child with the opportunity to problem solve and face age-appropriate challenges. This doesn’t mean going out of your way to create problems for your child, but allowing them to work their way through any that come their way. Encourage them to think creatively and come up with a list of solutions to their obstacles. Try and resist the urge to solve the issue for them and instead, support them in weighing out the pros and cons of each solution that they come up with.

Helping your child develop their critical thinking skills is one of the greatest gifts you can offer them. By encouraging curiosity and problem solving, you can ensure your child is able to make effective decisions and come up with solutions to any problem that crosses their path.
