Active Hobbies Kids Will Love
We all know the importance of children getting enough exercise. And while kids are naturally energetic, this day in age it can be difficult getting them to reach their daily recommended target of an hour a day. With computers, phones and other gadgets, kids are more sedentary than ever, no longer are they off seeking adventure outdoors when they’re bored, as they have the world at their fingertips. To get them away from their screens and getting active, here are some activities they’ll actually enjoy.
Horse riding
Most kids love animals, and so what better hobby that combines animals with fitness? You might think it’s the horse doing all the work when it comes to riding but it’s not the case, the sport is excellent for cardiovascular fitness as well as toning the arms, legs, back and core. From horse riding to showjumping to dressage, there are lots of different options, and it’s sure to be something kids really enjoy. On the downside, horse riding can be an expensive hobby, as well as the lessons themselves you need lots of equipment from your head (helmet) right down to your toes (horse riding boots) and everything in between. However, if your child has expressed an interest in learning to ride a horse, it’s an interesting and fulfilling hobby that will keep them fit without it even feeling like exercise. See if there are any local groups and sessions for children nearby, as they move up the ranks and start doing more and more it can be fascinating to watch.
Swimming
Swimming is excellent exercise, it tones just about every muscle in the body while improving cardiovascular fitness. Teaching kids to swim is an important life skill, and once they can do this they’ll enjoy everything from swimming lessons to casual swimming sessions at the weekend with friends. Lots of towns and cities have things like splash and wave pools and large pools with floats and games which allow kids to swim and play in a fun way and burn off a whole lot of energy without it feeling like a chore in the slightest. Swimming isn’t too expensive, and all you need is some swimwear, goggles and armbands. Getting kids into the pool from a young age helps build their confidence, and they’ll be swimming like a fish before you know it. Make weekend swimming a treat, and they’ll enjoy themselves and not think twice about the calories they’re burning and the good its doing their body!
Trampolining
Trampolining is a whole lot of fun, it tones all areas of the body and helps with things like balance and precision. There are a number of skills they will learn over the weeks from different twists, drops and spins and once they’re at a certain stage they can even enter into competitions against other children. If you don’t want to go down the competitive route, there are lots of companies that offer free bounce sessions that are just for fun, they’re popular for kids birthdays but are also great for after school or weekend treats where they can go and bounce and have fun. When you see how red-faced and breathless they are when they get off the trampoline, it will be easy to see just how much hard work they’ve put in! But again, they’ll be having so much fun it just won’t feel like exercise, and something they’ll genuinely see as a treat and fun activity.
Ice/ roller skating
Ice and roller rinks often have fun sessions for kids and teens where music is played and its a fun place to socialise while getting your skates on. Skating is excellent for the legs and core and burns a surprising number of calories. It helps with balance and works out the heart and lungs. Whether it’s a kids or teens roller disco or a family ice skating session, it’s another great way to have fun while getting a workout in.
