The region of Algarve is one of the beautiful areas in Portugal. Known for its white-sand beaches, mild temperatures, and warm waters, the Algarve coast is a destination that is the perfect family-friendly holiday spot. There is something for everyone here, it is safe, and it is of course beautiful.

So if you are wondering how to plan a holiday in the Algarve, here is your guide to family travel and some of the best places to stay in Algarve:

Things to know before leaving for Algarve

Learn some key Portuguese phrases

Knowing some basic phrases of the local language is incredibly helpful and respectful while travelling. While many speak English here (especially at the resorts), learning some key phrases in Portuguese such as ‘thank you’, ‘please’, and ‘where can I find..’ can be very useful! You can use language apps such as Babbel to follow an online Portuguese course that you can do whenever you have the time, before and even during your trip.

Travel just off-season

While the Algarve is a year-round destination due to its comfortable temperatures, going off-season can be more appealing to some. If possible, visit the Algarve in September or October when temperatures are more comfortable and there are fewer tourists. You’ll also find that costs are often more affordable, from flights to accommodation.

Head to Praia da Rocha beach for beach activities

If you want to try something or your kids need a little extra entertainment while at the beach, head to Praia da Rocha beach in Portimão. You can play volleyball, surf, and go scuba diving.

Best places for families in the Algarve

Albufeira

Albufeira is the most popular resort area, so if it is your first time here and you want to go somewhere you know will be a hit, this is a great option! There are many travel packages you can find for a trip here, and this can make travelling a lot more affordable for families. The beaches are sandy so you can spend your days here playing in the sand and water, and there are plenty of restaurants and bars around that you can choose from for your evenings. Just be prepared for a lot of tourists!

Sagres

Sagres is a quaint village where you can spend quality time with your family, go to the beach, and enjoy the gorgeous scenery. If you prefer a quiet holiday, this is a wonderful spot for a family holiday. Be sure to check out the fortress here and try a local beer!

Luz

Many tourists from the UK go to Luz because it is close to Albufeira but more quiet and relaxing. A favourite activity here is to go on a boat trip and see the caves.

Lagos

Head to Lagos for a relaxed holiday where you can always find a spot at the beaches and wind your way along the city’s cobbled streets. It is a cute coastal town where you can eat at local spots for a very fair price and then wander the city alongside the fortified walls.

Best activities for families in the Algarve

Marine parks

While you can see wildlife along the coast, head to the Marine Park if you have young kids and want a break from the beaches. It is the biggest attraction here, with dolphins, seals and many other animals to see! Bring your swimsuit to spend some time at the water slides at Zoomarine beach, too!

Mini golf

If you love mini golf, get in some putting time while in the Algarve! The Family Golf Park in Vilamoura is one of the most popular spots to go mini golfing.

Boat trips

While the views are incredible from the coastline, there is something extra special about seeing the Algarve from the water. Head out for a boat trip to get a change of scenery and take in the gorgeous views. You can choose activity boat trips or a leisurely and relaxing one where you can just enjoy and stop for a swim every so often.
