7 Essential Safety Tips For Spring Gardening

Having a garden is nothing less than a blessing. With spring around the corner, you could use your garden space to its fullest potential. From adding colourful plants to introducing new shrubs, there are several additions you could make to your home garden.

However, as beautiful as the thought of having a garden might be, its maintenance isn’t that easy. At times, it can be a problem and an added hassle. We all know that gardening requires individuals to lift heavy pots, crouch for hours, and stay in the scorching heat.

If one isn’t careful, they might get injured during the process. Thus, gardening should be performed while keeping in mind safety tips. Here are seven safety precautions to follow while carrying out any task in your garden.

Remember, following these tips will let you create a beautiful garden without needing to tend to joint pain afterwards.

Take Care of Yourself While Gardening

Gardening can be a lovely experience and often calms your nerves. However, that doesn’t mean you overwork yourself. It’s crucial to realise the human body’s needs just as you understand the need for plants in your garden.

According to experts at Gateway Home and Garden Center in Northern VA, “Plants need a balanced composition of three critical components, mulch, soil, and compost. These three elements work to make your garden beautiful and lush green.”

Similarly, your body requires a proper balance of rest and nutrients. If your body feels fatigued, immediately take a break or get someone’s help.

Excessive exertion might cause permanent damage to your joints and muscles, which will mean you won’t be able to attend to your garden till you fully heal, which could take days or weeks.

Do Some Warm Up Exercises Before Starting

Another safety tip while gardening is to always start with a warm-up routine. Your body needs to warm up before doing any physical exertion so that it can carry out all the hard work.

By carrying out a warming-up routine, your joints and muscles will relax and provide more support. Apart from warming up, take regular stretch breaks in between your activities. That way, your body parts won’t stiffen.

It is highly recommended to stretch your neck, wrist, arms, legs, and back. These body parts become sore, and stretching out could reduce pain.

Kneel Properly

It’s common for people to kneel on both knees while planting trees or shrubs in their garden, but that’s not a correct move. With both knees directly on the ground, you put extra pressure on them, resulting in harm to sensitive knee joints.

Instead of pressing both knees to the ground, keep one leg in front and the other knee on the ground. With this posture, your knees don’t feel any pressure, and your spine remains straight.

If possible, wrap knee pads to keep your knees safe from the rocky ground.

Don’t Lift Anything in a Rush

You will be doing a lot of heavy lifting during the process, and it’s possible to sprain your back. Therefore, avoid lifting anything in an incorrect posture or in a rush.

Often, inexperienced gardeners lift things while putting pressure on their backs or with their knees locked. These mistakes can give you severe back problems. The best tip to prevent injuring your back is to use your hips and legs to lift any heavy object.

Further, keep your legs at a distance and push your hips towards the back. Using this posture, your back remains pain-free, whether you pick up a bag of cement or soil.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Just as plants need water, the human body also requires a specific percentage of water in a day to carry out daily tasks. Keep in mind to hydrate yourself after short intervals. Gardening requires you to put in the effort and perform manual labor, which can drain your energy.

In addition, you will be outdoors the entire time, so have a water bottle beside you. By staying hydrated, you won’t feel tired at any hour. Spray a little water on your face and hands as well to lower the effect of heat.

Remember to Wear Proper Gardening Shoes

While gardening, it’s important to wear high-quality shoes, as they will protect you and your feet from all possible harm. Often, individuals wear slippers or crocs to carry out gardening-related tasks, but this increases the risk of slip and fall accidents.

Additionally, it’s crucial to remember that your garden may contain sharp thorns that could injure your feet, so investing in gardening boots is essential. Not only do they keep you safe, but they also allow you to garden comfortably throughout the entire day, preventing fatigue.

Be Careful About Exposure

Gardening requires individuals to stay outdoors for hours. There are many tasks to be carried out, including preparing the soil, preparing plant beds, and planting saplings. All this needs to be completed while standing in the scorching heat.

The heat and sun drain your body and also result in extreme tanning. So, cover yourself with sunscreen and try wearing full-length clothes. It is also advisable to spray bug repellent on your body to prevent insect bites.
