Ideas and Inspirations For A Winter Bathroom
When winter arrives, some say it can have a negative effect on how our home looks and feels. No natural daylight bursting through the windows, cold and drafts coming in from places we didn’t know had gaps, and an overall lack of sunlight and brightness filling our rooms. However, it doesn’t have to be such a bad season for your home. If you think about it, most of us spend more time than ever before in our homes over the winter months, because it’s just too cold to be venturing out.
With this in mind, there can be a lot of fun to be made around making your home all snug and warm looking for winter. And although your bathroom is usually the most clinical, coldest looking room of all, who is to say you can’t make this room be updated to look all cosy and winter ready?
If you have a good look around on Pinterest, Instagram, and various interior sites, you’ll be surprised at home many ideas and inspirations you can get around the winter/festive season. And just because we’re talking winter, that doesn’t mean we’re talking about painting your bathroom Santa Claus red or Christmas Tree green.
Here’s a couple of handy hints and tips to start you off on your winter bathroom revamp:
1. Consider Your Colour Scheme
Many colours and hues come to mind when we think about winter interiors. But whilst for the ‘busier’ rooms of the house – such as the lounge – you can be a little wilder with berries, evergreens and candy shades, the bathroom still needs to resemble a clean, tranquil atmosphere.
Think about re-painting your walls to fresh muted greys, latte browns & rich creams, to represent those frosty mornings. For accent colours, such as those bathroom accessories, wall arts and fabrics, think about your personal favourite things associated with winter. Is it the bright blue skies, is it the beautiful forests or is it the sweet treats we bake and indulge in at this time? This will help spark your creativity and ensure you create a colour scheme you really love.
2. Mood lighting
Lighting is the best way to set the ambience and mood of a room, and if you do it cleverly, you can actually make a bathroom look warm and cosy. Think about fitting wall lights or under-counter lighting to your bathroom, so you can switch off your main lights when enjoying a bath, instantly creating an atmosphere that is both snug and inviting.
A good way to get a sense of natural light, or that romantic feel, is by adding in a skylight or large window. Imagine sitting in the bath, or standing in the shower, and seeing stars in the sky, or the early orange skies of sunrise. Another clever way of utilising light in the bathroom to create a more cosy winter feel is to ensure spotlights and imitation candles are strategically placed. These can create an atmospheric mood, and by having dimmer switches, you can have that moody, dimly lit candlelight feel. Think about keeping your candles in lantern holders – these are quite cheap to buy but look sophisticated and give off a luxury vibe.
3. Bathroom Furniture
For an instant way to create warmth and comfort in your bathroom, look at the materials, shapes and sizes of your bathroom furniture. Look for enamel basins rather than stainless steel, and vintage wood rather than pine. These add a much more homely look to your bathroom.
If you have a smaller bathroom, make more space by investing in a smaller bathtub, or even corner baths. These are built so cleverly now that your bathroom will still look roomier just with extra space that would have been taken up with larger items.
If you have always toyed with the idea of mosaic or print detail tiles, winter is also the time to try this out. These can give that warm, homely effect. But just be careful they fit into the colour scheme.
4. Towelling
It may seem like a dull task, but investing in new towelling for your bathroom as winter approaches is actually more fun than it sounds! You can select the biggest, fluffiest towels which will look inviting when stepping out of the bath, and you can use these as an excuse to create a whole new colour scheme.
When creating a cosy space, it’s not just the look of the bathroom that’s important – it’s functionality can also make it feel warm and inviting. By having your new fluffy towels match your bath mat keeps the theme strong and gives a nicer experience. Plus, what’s more indulging than placing fresh new towels on a heated towel rail?
5. Furnishings
Following on from towelling, it’s the other accessories and furnishings you decorate your bathroom with that are also essential for adding those homely touches. For those with floor tiling or a large floor surface area, a thick rug will keep your feet warm and create ambience.
If you have lots of tiles and mirrors, these will help break up large areas of wall space to make the room feel bigger, without making it seem too ‘cold’. Sometimes, too much wall art can look a little tacky in bathrooms, so look to tiles and mirrors before going down this route (a couple are OK!).
Last but not least, get some wintery looking flowers or add a touch of greenery to your bathroom. They’ll look great in a warm light and will punctuate the room with freshness. These can be anything from fresh flowers to little pots of artificial flowers, that can be perched on the window ledge.
There you have it – a few simple steps to make your once cold-looking, uninviting bathroom a warm, cosy haven.
