A Guide to Orlando Theme Parks
What springs to mind when you think of Orlando? The answer is most probably the vast amount of Orlando theme parks which are situated around the Sunshine State. As of 2009, Orlando is the most visited city in the US, and no wonder why when there is so much to see and do!
From riding the fastest rollercoaster at SeaWorld, shaking hands with Mickey Mouse at Walt Disney World and jumping aboard Florida’s tallest launch coaster at Busch Gardens, here is my guide to theme parks in Orlando!
Walt Disney World
First things first, probably the most well-known theme park in the world! Opening in 1971, in 50 years the park has grown to include four theme parks; Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot and two water parks; Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.
At 40 square miles and about the same size as San Francisco, Disney World is home to 175 attractions across the 25,000 acres. With family favourites such as ‘‘it’s a small world’’ and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, there is a whole lot to do. As well as the impressive number of rides for every thrill-seeking level, there are numerous live shows and eateries covering all cuisines.
Universal Orlando
Opening in 1990, Universal Orlando is home to three parks; Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and Volcano Bay. As well as CityWalk the entertainment complex, which is free to visit, even if you aren’t heading into the parks!
Universal is probably most famous for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. With Diagon Alley located within Universal Studios and Hogsmeade situated in Islands of Adventure. Jump on board the infamous Hogwarts Express and ride between both worlds (as long as you have tickets for both parks!).
If you’re a fan of Transformers, Spider-Man and Despicable Me, then you’ll love Universal! There are many villas for rent near Universal Studios Orlando, and you could easily spend your whole holiday exploring the park!
LEGOLAND
Located in Winter Haven, and the newest theme park, LEGOLAND opened its doors in 2011 and is designed with children aged two – twelve in mind. With more than 50 rides, areas for the kids to get creative and places to build, the park is underrated!
LEGOLAND is split into 15 lands including; imagination zone, which allows the kids to get hands-on with LEGO and LEGOLAND Water Park where you can splash and slide!
SeaWorld
Cast your eyes on dolphins, flamingos and penguins at SeaWorld, which opened in 1973. SeaWorld features four roller coasters, three water rides and numerous brilliant shows.
The best thing about SeaWorld is that there are numerous times you are able to interact with the animals. From touching Stingrays to walking through the 360-degree tunnel with sea life swimming above.
Mako is the fastest roller coaster in Orlando, named after the fastest shark, this ride will shoot you 73 mph around twists and turns, and have you screaming for more!
Gatorland
The oldest theme park in Orlando, Gatorland opened in 1943 and combines wildlife and nature. With over 2,000 gators, it is also referred to as the best half-day attraction in Orlando!
Spread over 110-acres, zip-line your way over 130 gators on Screamin’ Gator Zip Line and witness alligators jump for joy during one of the many shows on offer at Gatorland.
Aquatica Orlando
The award-winning water park, Aquatica opened in 2008. With sandy beaches, incredible water rides and animal encounters, the park is the perfect family-friendly place.
The kids will love splashing around in the two wave pools, and the dolphin plunge will shoot you through twin slides before you catch a glimpse of Commerson’s dolphins, a truly unique experience!
As well as plenty for the kids to do, Aquatica has some amazing water rides. Such as KareKare Curl, Ihy’s Breakaway Falls and Omaka Rocka, all for thrill-seekers!
Discovery Cove
A theme park with a difference, Discovery Cove is more expensive than other theme parks in Orlando, but food and drink are included in the price of your ticket, making it the perfect place for families!
At Discovery Cove, you are able to get up close and personal with some amazing marine life, including swimming with thousands of fish and paddling with otters.
When it comes to buying theme park tickets, there are a variety of options you are able to choose from. You are able to get combo tickets, flexi tickets, day tickets, and the list goes on! Depending on how long you have in the theme park capital of the world will depend on the ticket type you opt for.
