Ecoegg Laundry Egg Review

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been trying out some new laundry products. In our house we do an average of 7 loads of washing a week, this can be more or slightly less depending on the time of year but as a family of 5, I bet my washing machine certainly feels like it never gets a break.

I was sent 3 Ecoegg products to try. Ecoegg Detox Tablets, an Ecoegg Laundry Egg and a set of two Ecoegg Dryer Eggs.

A couple of months ago I had an emergency of the washing machine cleaning variety. It resulted in my washing machine breaking down – never to work again. To say I was gutted was an understatement. I wasn’t aware that everyday washing powders/liquids that although they smell lovely actually hide the smell of all the built-up gunk and sludge that we can’t see hidden in our washing machines.

I had changed my washing powder to one that was more environmentally friendly (and less perfumed) and soon after I was able to smell this hidden gunk and sludge within its pipes, it wasn’t until I was talking to my friends about this smell coming from my washing machine that they said what the reason for this was. They said I should use bleach / white vinegar to clean my machine and although this did get rid of the smell, the machine never worked afterwards.

I’m unsure of the reason why my washing machine broke down, I am pretty sure it wasn’t the cleaning method I had tried but I have a suspicion that it was probably to do with the fact I had never put a cleaner through my washing machine in all of its 7 years of almost daily use (in my defence I didn’t know it needed cleaning regularly).

Luckily Matt’s parents had an old machine in their shed that we could borrow until we could afford to replace ours. Had I known about Ecoegg’s Detox Tablets sooner my washing machine may have just been saved. I have since detoxed our “replacement” washer and although it didn’t look or smell like it needed it I could tell soon after that there had been an improvement.

Ecoegg’s  Detox Tablets are designed to get rid of this problem and they also eliminate the build-up of powder and liquid residue, not just masking it – leaving you a lovely clean and fresh-smelling machine. Each box is priced at £3.99 and contains 6 tablets. It is recommended that you should clean your machine every 6 months so one box is enough for 3 year’s worth of machine cleaning – well worth the money if you ask me.

 

 

After my washing machine had been detoxed I washed a normal load of washing. Instead of using my usual washing powder, I used the Ecoegg Laundry Egg. 

 

 

The Laundry Egg is safe for use with fabric softener and in washes up to 60°C, it can even be used in cooler washes to save energy and will do just as good a job as on a hot wash. There is no need for the measuring, scooping or pouring of powders or detergents, you simply place it on top of your washing and you’re ready to wash your clothes. It is suitable for white and coloured washes and is safe for all fabrics – even delicates.

When I first opened up the laundry egg I was a little surprised to see bags of what looked like pellets. After reading the instructions I found that these were in fact the the things needed for cleaning my washing.

 

 

The Egg contains scientifically formulated, patented pellets – these pellets are the secret to the Laundry Egg’s cleaning power. 

 

The egg contains two types of pellets, one set is dark-coloured and the other set is white. They both do separate jobs but together they will clean your washing.

 

• The dark-coloured tourmaline ceramic pellets are used for stain busting they are designed to weaken the stubborn stains on fabrics.
• The White mineral pellets naturally ionize the oxygen molecules in the water, this then moves deep into the fabric lifting away any dirt and grime, without fading colours or damaging the fibres.

Testing shows that the two types of pellets used together give the best cleaning results. The ionized oxygen molecules also increase the pH level of the water, which has a natural softening effect on your laundry, so you do not need to use additional fabric softener or conditioner although if you want to for added fragrance/softness then the Eggs are perfectly safe to be used with them. The pellets are easy to put in the egg and do need replacing. But each Laundry Egg comes with enough refills to last you many washes.

 

One of the major advantages to the Laundry Egg is that they don’t leave any residue unlike washing powders or liquids therefore there is no need for a rinse cycle. This could save you time, energy and money with every wash.

 

You can find Laundry Egg in a variety of fragrances including Spring Blossom, Soft Cotton or fragrance free. They are available to buy in either 720 Washes or 210 washes. The Laundry Egg we were sent was a 720 Spring Blossom variety and it has a lovely fresh smell. It is priced at £19.99. Once you have run out of pellets you can purchase refills.

Overall the 3 key points about Laundry Egg to remember are:

• It saves you money – the equivalent to 3p per wash
• They are hypoallergenic – great for sensitive skin, and even supported by Allergy UK
• They are Eco-friendly  making them great for the environment as they contain no harsh chemicals and there is far less pollution / recycling as each egg and pellets lasts for either 720 or 210 washes (depending on which one you buy)

 

 

The third product we were sent was a set of Dryer Eggs. My mother-in-law swears by hers and is always telling me to get some and now I have some.

 

 

The Dryer Eggs are scientifically proven to reduce drying time by up to 28%, this saves both money and energy. If like us you are on meters for your energy and have a strict budget for your electricity then you do not want to be spending all your money trying to dry your clothes. 

 

The Dryer Eggs contain a hidden unique hypoallergenic fragrance stick, which is infused with essential oil that fragrances your clothes in the dryer. Dryer Eggs are also available in the Soft Cotton or Spring Blossom fragrances. The Dryers Eggs leave your clothes smelling lovely and very soft to the touch. They are great for sensitive skin too.

The dryer Eggs are priced at £9.99 for a pack of two. Each egg comes with 2 fragrance sticks (approx 80 uses). These eggs are also refillable. Each fragrance stick last for 40 dries, after this time you just need to put a new fragrance stick inside the egg and you’re ready to dry. 

When drying clothes normally in a tumble dryer, clothes can clump together in the drum leaving a lot of unused space. This takes longer for your clothes to dry but the Dryer Eggs stop this from happening as they are covered in little rubber nodules. The Eggs gently lift and separate clothes in your tumble dryer making use of all the available space which allows the heat of the dryer to circulate more efficiently. By gently lifting the fibres the Dryer Eggs break down stiffness and soften your clothes naturally without any harsh chemicals.

Overall I think these products are of good quality and very good value for money. They look after your washing machine and help you reduce your energy consumption. They are environmentally friendly and friendly to your purse too. I will be continuing to use my Laundry Egg products in every wash and most importantly remember to clean my washing machine every 6 months (we won’t have any more accidents of that kind in our house).
