When Is It The Right Time To Drop Your Child’s Nickname…

I don’t know about anyone else but as my three get older and become more independent I sometimes find myself in a no man’s land of never knowing if I’m doing or saying the right things.

One of these moments happened a couple of weeks ago when Nathan asked me to stop calling him Noodles when we were in or around school as he didn’t want his friends and classmates to hear me calling him it anymore, although he did say I could still call him it at home – so I guess all is not lost. I think because it came out of the blue is why it shocked me as I didn’t think he minded. He said that although it wasn’t a bad nickname some of his classmates had started to call him it and snigger or laugh when they did so.

It got me thinking about how long he has wanted me to stop and I really hope that it hasn’t been playing on his mind for a long time as I’d hate that for any of the boys and were these friends just being boys with their silly ways or was there more to their sniggers and laughs – maybe my anxiety is making this a bigger thing than it needs to be but you can’t help but wonder can you.

I have to be honest and say that it makes me a little bit sad that at the age of 10 he is already deciding that he no longer wants me to use it. I suppose on one hand he is growing up and is allowed to say when he doesn’t want something being used anymore – I can understand that he doesn’t want his friends teasing him about it, although I do believe his two best friends call him noodles too and he is fine with that so I’m not alone. But on the other, I don’t want him making decisions yet as it means he is growing up way to fast and the things that make him my little boy are slowly slipping away.

James is a total kettle of fish altogether though, he is known by a variety of names including Jimbob and Jimbo and he loves it and even tells people to call him it. So I guess I have a little while longer of being able to call the baby of the family his nickname.

Do you have nicknames for your children, if so, when do you think is the right time to drop it?

Ahh yes, my brother is 6 years younger than me, and when he was born (into a family of 4 girls) my parents struggled with naming him so we called him Baby Boy. That stuck! And even now I sometimes find myself calling him Boy. I think some people think it’s a bad name but it’s endeering to us as me (at 6 year old) and my 8 year old sister just stuck with that name
