Choosing the Right Flooring for Your Home

When it comes to replacing the floor coverings in your home, it is often an expensive job, so you want to make sure that when the time comes you get it right from the off. As there are so many things to take into consideration when choosing the right flooring that it can be a little overwhelming.

Are you looking for a new carpet, perhaps laminate flooring or a vinyl floor? If you’re yet to decide and unsure which covering is right for you, our considerations below might just help you make the decision easier.

The room the flooring is for

Depending on the room where your new flooring will go is probably one of the biggest factors when deciding on the type of flooring that you will end up buying. Are you looking for a bedroom, a kitchen, living room or the hallway, landing and stairs? We have a mixture of laminate, vinyl and carpets in our home and the mix works well for us at the minute. All the bedrooms and hallway, landing and stairs are carpeted whilst the living room is currently laminated. I’ve said previously that in the future we want to update our living room, within our plans we are hoping to replace our laminate flooring with a new living room carpet instead. Our laminate is looking a little worse for wear but that is because it has been well worn.

Your budget

It goes without saying the more money you have to spend, the more choice you will have when it comes to choosing your new flooring. This is also true for the quality of flooring that you will get for your money – more budget means better quality.

Floor surface

If you are adding new carpet or laminate to an uneven floor you need to ensure that you have a good quality underlay under your new flooring, this will cushion the flooring and even out any floorboards that aren’t quite even. Ideally, floors should be levelled and cleaned before the new flooring is placed so that you get the best end result possible.

High traffic areas

We are a family of 5 with two cats and two dogs. For us, laminate flooring is a lifesaver in our living room and vinyl flooring in our kitchen and bathroom. Our pets spend most of their time in the living room with us and they are notorious moulters in the spring and autumn. This is the main reason why we have a laminate floor at it easy to keep clean and tidy.

If you prefer carpets in your home and have pets and young children, you may want to opt for a dark coloured one so that it will keep looking as good as new for longer. Light coloured carpets look lovely, but they are so hard to keep looking that way especially if you have pets and small children about. We recently decorated our landing, hallway and stairs we decided on a grey carpet for this area as it is one of the main high traffic areas in our home. Everyone must walk on it to get upstairs or to use the bathroom and to get from the front door to the living room and kitchen. It still looks good as new months later and I’m hoping it will stay that way too.

Are you planning on updating any of your flooring soon?
