Now that we’ve turned the clocks back winter is most definitely on its way and if the nights getting darker wasn’t enough of a clue, the small scattering of snow some of the UK experienced the other day definitely was a sure sign that it’s only going to get colder over the coming months. I don’t know about you but I’m not a fan of the cold and if I could, I would certainly be looking at escaping the winter.
If you’ve got a touch of the winter blues already and want to escape them to warmer climates I have a few places you could consider going.
The Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are a favourite amongst those who like to escape the colder months here in the UK. The islands are known for their Mediterranean climate of dry summer months and mild winters that have very little rainfall, temperatures are mild and stable throughout the year and average between 18 – 24 °C. The winter months in the Canaries are generally mild too – Tenerife sees average maximum temperatures of 21 °C in January despite it being the islands coldest month.
Another destination that is popular with travellers escaping the cold is The Algarve and it comes as no surprise when the region sees more sunshine hours a year than California. It is only a short flight away from home so it appeals to visitors of all ages. If you are planning to avoid the rain December is the month to avoid as this is The Algarves wettest month of the year. Temperatures are still around 20 °C but days are much shorter so you’d probably be better planning your visit in the spring or autumn months if you’d prefer a little more warmth and longer days – having said that it is still a lot warmer than here in the UK in December even if there is more chance of rain.
For those wanting to go a little further afield for their sunshine, Mauritius is definitely a place to consider. The average temperature here is as high as 27 °C, even in November so you pretty much guarantee you’ll have amazing weather when you visit. This little piece of paradise would be the perfect place to spend a week or two away from the cold and blustery weather at home.
Another destination that is both close to home and relatively cheap to visit, but one that has long, warm and dry days during the winter months is Cyprus. Most days see an average temperature of around 20°C making it the perfect destination for visitors young and old.
Disney fans young and old would love Florida in the winter time (well any time of the year lets face it) but at Halloween, Christmas and New Year Disney are known to throw the mother of all celebrations. Team that with plenty of sunshine and temperatures of an average of 17 – 21 °C what’s not to love?
Are you planning on escaping the winter? If so I’d love to know where you are planning you go.
