Tips For Teaching Your Kids How To Swim

One of the most important skills that you can teach your kids from a young age is how to swim. They will need to know how to swim for when they are on holiday, for their school trips and for when they need to swim in an emergency. Getting your child to start to learn how to swim can be difficult and if you have never taught someone how to swim before you might struggle. To help you with this, we have put together some tips so keep reading if you’d like to find out more.

Start Slowly

Our first tip is to try to start as slowly as possible. Your child won’t have ever tried swimming before and if you start too quickly they might get nervous. Try teaching in the shallow end, to begin with, and show your child that they are safe here – with their armbands on of course!

Make Them Feel Confident

If your child feels like they look confident then they might feel a lot better about jumping in that pool. Why not take them shopping and buy them a nice new swimsuit for the big day? You’ll find a great selection of kids swimwear from Folpetto that will definitely make your child feel great. On top of this, you should also invest in some floating devices like armbands or a life jacket, depending on their age and size.

Keep It Fun

No one likes to learn something new when their parents are shouting at them, this is why you should try to make this whole experience as fun as possible. Think about how you could play some games with your kids while they are in the pool and don’t be too serious when you are giving instructions.

Lead By Example If you really want to teach your kids to swim effectively, you need to think about leading by example. This means that you are going to need to get into the pool with them and not just stand at the side barking orders. Think about how much they copy what you do, and you’ll realise that this is the best possible way to teach your kids how to swim.

Help The Practice Kicking

You’ll remember that when you first started to learn how to swim, you weren’t just thrown into the water and expected to fend for yourself. This is why you should make sure to teach each individual part of the process carefully to your kids. Make sure that you spend a lot of time holding onto them and getting them to practice kicking the water. If you’re lucky, they’ll love this part and they’ll want to keep doing it for a while.

Go Back Again Soon

Our final tip for those who are teaching their kids how to swim is to make sure that you do it often. If you take your kids to the local swimming pool and then never go back again, they won’t know how to swim properly, and they’ll lose their confidence. Make sure that if you are going to teach them that you are willing to make the time commitment. If you can’t commit to teaching them at least once or twice a week, you should find out about local swimming classes for their age group.

If you are teaching your kids how to swim, you should try to follow all of the advice that we have given you in this article. If you do, your kids will soon be confident enough to swim by themselves.
