Attractions To Visit In Gran Canaria

If you are looking for a fun and family-friendly place to take the kids on holiday this year. I would highly recommend looking at Gran Canaria Holidays for 2018/2019 with Holiday Gems. Gran Canaria is the biggest of the Canary Islands, is one of the sunniest places in the world and boasts that it has very few days of rainfall annually.

It has been a long time since I last visited the island but it is definitely somewhere I am planning to take the boys in the next year or so. I was in my second year of uni and went away with my best friend. We stayed in a resort in Maspalomas and we had a lovely time. We had nice meals out and lounged by the side of the pool, we visited the beach and we even went on a camel safari and a jeep ride up into the mountains.

There is something for everyone in Gran Canaria from water sports to amusement parks, here are some ideas of places you could visit.

The Beach

Gran Canaria has some spectacular beaches, in fact, the island has over 100 of them. They’re a great place for families to have a fun day out. When on holiday I love to relax by the pool or at the beach where I can read my book in peace or paddle in the sea with the boys. They love nothing better than to build sandcastles and digging big holes.

Carnival

If you are lucky enough to visit Gran Canaria when Carnival season is in full swing you are in for a treat. For over five centuries the island has celebrated carnival. This year’s celebrations took place 26th January – 18th February. This years theme was magic and fantastic creatures and guests were encouraged to dress up and join in with the fun and festivities.

Jeep Safari

One way to see some of the amazing sights that the island has to offer is by Jeep. Your safari starts with a pickup point in a local town, from then on you will travel in convey and spend the day travelling through the mountain tracks stopping off for little breaks and lunch along the way. This was an excursion I loved and would do again with the boys and would highly recommend. I would recommend taking something to cover your face with as it can get pretty dusty once you leave the main roads.

Camel Safari

If you’re staying close to Maspalomas I would definitely recommend going on a camel safari. It was so much fun when I went on one. You get to go for a walk through a little of the sand dunes that Maspalomas is famous for.

Palmitos Park

Palmitos Park is situated 10 kilometres away from Maspalomas. It covers over 20 hectares and is home to a zoo,  an aquarium, botanical garden, dolphinarium an aviary and lots more. You could spend the whole day in the park and still find plenty to do. Attractions include:

  • Dolphinarium – Visitors can get up close to 5 dolphins and enjoy shows daily. The park is not only a place of entertainment but also provides awareness and information about the dolphins who live there.
  • The Avery – Is home to flamingos, Ibis from South America and Africa, many different kinds of parrots like Lorries and Toucans. A wide variety of Hornbills, Pelicans living alongside Storks, the Australian Emu.
  • Aquarium – The park is home to two aquaria, with Freshwater and Saltwater species from all over the world. You will get to see Scorpion Fish and Clown Fish in the Saltwater Aquarium and Black Pacu and Seahorses plus many others in the Freshwater Aquarium.
  • Reptiles – Komodo Dragons, Caimans, Californian Turtles and the Gran Canaria Giant Lizard can all be seen too.
  • Mammals – Gibbons and Orang-utans, Aardvarks, Wallabies Meerkats, Talapoins and many more species can be seen at the park too.
  • Butterflies -The park is home to the biggest butterfly house in Europe. Here you can see the different phases of the life cycle of the butterfly, from the chrysalis up to the moment that they emerge as beautiful butterflies.

Have you been to Gran Canaria? Would you consider going?
