Here’s what she had to say about her track choices.
All the songs that appear on this list are here for completely different reasons. Some because of how they made me feel, some because of the memories attached and some because they marked great cultural moments. The one thing that connects each of these tracks is that they document the milestones of my growth and development and for that reason will always be a positive light in my life.
Black boys – Bashy
In an age of rap battles and clashes, it was nice to feel like the entire urban scene was united, even if it was for one fleeting moment. There were so many remixes, men, women, newcomers, veterans. Everyone came together to promote a positive image of black people. While the song was entitled black boys as a young black girl at the time I felt equally as empowered as I believe the song was intended for them to feel.
It would be really powerful to see something like this again but if not I am just happy to have been able to live through it.
Jason Mraz – I’m yours
I was in a girl group from about 12-16 and this was the first cover we did that got us some recognition. We were always great friends but this song saw the birth of the moment where we all clicked musically and that was an irreplaceable feeling. Even though we’ve all gone our separate ways this song will always have a special place in my heart.
Oopsy Daisy – Chipmunk
Aside from the fact I had the hugest crush on Chip as a kid (don’t ever get my mum started on this one), this was probably the first time I experienced what I assumed to be heartbreak – if only I could tell my teenage self it wasn’t even close. For me, this song will always bring back memories of young ‘love’ and a time when the world was less complicated
See you again – Wiz Khalifa
2015 was a very turbulent year. Without going into too much detail there was a lot of loss experienced here from so many different angles. This was one of many songs that kept me going.
I’m Getting ready – Tasha Cobbs ft Nicki Minaj
My faith is massively important to me so it comes as no surprise that there is at least one Gospel song on this list. If I am being honest I could probably have done this whole list based on Gospel music but didn’t purely because I am trying to give the audience a wholistic view of myself. This song is special to me for 2 reasons. 1) It came at a time where I decided to be more serious about my faith and 2) Tasha Cobbs reached out to say that she enjoyed my review of the song, which was the confirmation I needed at the time to know that I was heading in the right direction as a writer.
