Sometimes you just don’t have enough space no matter how little stuff you own or how hard you try to keep tidy. We live in a modest three-bed semi-detached house but it has no storage space at all and we have certainly outgrown the rooms we have.
Here are my ideas for making more space:
Extend – If you have the money and land you can add an extension to your home. We are hoping in a few years time to be able to add a garage, utility room, porch and an extra bedroom to our house. This will be a massive project but one that will give us all the extra space we need.
Use Your Loft Space – If the loft in your house is accessible it is the perfect place for storing all those essential but not always needed items (in my case my Christmas decorations and boxes for items whilst they’re still under warranty in case they need to be sent away if they should break). However, if your loft can be converted to make an extra room and you have the funds to do so you should consider this. Converting your loft could result in one or two extra rooms in your home. you could make the area into an office, bedroom or a playroom if you have older children. Adding a VELUXshop roof window or two would create plenty of light that would also help to make your loft conversion look bigger than it is.
Add Built in Wardrobes – If your bedroom has an alcove you can have made to measure wardrobes built so that they fill the space perfectly. You can usually choose from a range of styles and designs to give your wardrobes a personal feel and why not customise them instead so that there is more than just a hanging rail. You could have built-in drawers and shelves so that you have places for all those shoes, bags and other bits and bobs that always accumulate to live.
Open up Your Understairs Area – The one thing I really miss about my old house is the storage space it had. It had a huge cupboard in one of the bedrooms, an airing cupboard with shelves and an understairs cupboard where my vacuum, the boy’s toys and whatnot used to live. In our house, we have none of these so things live my vacuum and steam cleaner just live where there is a space for them and this is really annoying. If I was able the first thing I would do here is to open up under our stairs. I’d love to make it a little nook area filled with comfy cushions and a little bookshelf but for practical reasons, I would board it out, add a couple of small shelves so that my iron had a place to live and add a door so that all my cleaning tools can be hidden from sight.
Tell me I’m not the only one who dreams of having more storage space?
