Have you ever dreamed of a romantic winter proposal? After all, a snowy setting makes for a picture-perfect opportunity for getting down on one knee.
It is probably no surprise that the most popular days of the year for popping the question are Christmas Eve followed by Christmas Day. This was discovered by Facebook, who decided to find out when the most popular day to update a relationship status was.
It turns out that it is not only us mere mortals who are big fans of a festive engagement. A new survey released by Mayfair jewellers 77 Diamonds proved that December is also the preferred month of the year for celebrities to get engaged! That is just one of the stats revealed by their 2017 Celebrity Engagement Ring Trend Report, highlighting the rings of the rich and famous.
The gems of our favourite celebrities can have a huge influence on those we select for ourselves. 77 Diamonds tasked a team of keen researchers with analysing 100 celebrity engagement rings from recent years to see if any trends emerge in terms of the rings’ cut, clarity, metal and more. The team also took a look into which countries celebrities prefer to pop the question in – as well as, of course, their preferred times of the year to do so.
The results of the report are astonishing – the average celebrity engagement ring in 2016 cost a whopping £1 million. Celebrities whose engagements may have helped boost this figure include Mariah Carey, Miranda Kerr and Pippa Middleton. It seems that celebrities don’t stick to the ‘one month’s salary’ engagement ring cost rule like many of us do! In 2016, the average price of an engagement ring in the UK was £573.
When it comes to the crucial question of where to get engaged, celebrities have different preferences depending on their profession. Athletes such as Roy McIlroy favour proposing in France, while musicians such as Justin Timberlake prefer the USA. It’s no surprise that Paris is a preferred location for proposals, with its reputation as the City of Love well known across the world.
McIlroy proposed to his girlfriend Erica Stoll during a romantic break to the French capital. Justin Timberlake was across the pond in Wyoming on a Christmas break when he popped the question. Other musicians who found the States to be the perfect place to propose include Kanye West, who proposed to Kim Kardashian at San Francisco’s AT&T Park.
The ring style itself is also very important. If you want to follow a celebrity trend, platinum was the way to go in 2013-2015, before it was overtaken by white gold in 2016. This year, however, it is yellow gold that has won over celebrity hearts.
If the diamond cut is important for you, then you should know what celebrities prefer. In 2013 and 2014, it was an oval cut diamond that was on trend. From then on, however, it has been an emerald cut that has been a fashionable choice.
